Facebook Oversight Board Upholds Ban on Donald Trump - Do You Support the Decision?
Do you support or oppose Facebook's Trump ban?
What's the story?
- Facebook's Oversight Board has ruled that the platform was justified in its decision to "indefinitely" suspend former President Donald Trump after the Capitol riot.
- The court-like oversight board announced Facebook can continue blocking Trump from using its platform but must review the decision within six months.
"Within six months of this decision, Facebook must reexamine the arbitrary penalty it imposed on January 7 and decide the appropriate penalty ... This penalty must be based on the gravity of the violation and the prospect of future harm. It must also be consistent with Facebook's rules for severe violations, which must, in turn, be clear, necessary and proportionate."
- But the panel also criticized Facebook for having made the suspension indefinite:
"In applying a vague, standardless penalty and then referring this case to the Board to resolve, Facebook seeks to avoid its responsibilities. The Board declines Facebook's request and insists that Facebook apply and justify a defined penalty."
- Facebook released a statement reacting to the oversight board's decision:
"As we stated in January, we believe our decision was necessary and right, and we’re pleased the board has recognized that the unprecedented circumstances justified the exceptional measure we took," wrote Nick Clegg, VP of Global Affairs and Communications.

Facebook, Twitter, and other social media monopolies are illegally stopping people, including President Trump, from exercising their 1st Amendment Rights to express their opinions. We criticize several countries (examples - China, Northern Africa ones, Cuba, etc.) for blocking free speech - written and verbal - yet are allowing these companies to do the same in the USA. Anytime a designated group is allowed to determine which opinions are acceptable to be shared and which ones are not, we are experiencing oppression. Shame on us, USA citizens for allowing this to happen!
I want the Trump's to come out against Marjorie Taylor Greene's comments about the Holocaust. This woman is crazy and should be gagged immediately over her remarks against Jewish people.
I live in rural Michigan....just went to town and passed a house with all kinds of Trump/Don't tread on me/red and black flags for sale!....had to be 30 or 40 of them....they weren't there yesterday. The MADNESS continues....the end was not 1/6.
You know, it’s people like you what cause unrest!
It is a reflection of the weak minded and weak moral fiber that weaves through the people that host these platforms. Mark Zucherberg - really? What on earth would any of you hire him to do? Most of these social media get-rich-quick founders are themselves socially retarded - they couldn't hold a conversation outside of their gaming group. These aren't big thinkers, just guys that got rich so fast that they can't process logical thoughts. They may have a platform and a lot of dough but most can't properly articulate jack shit.
If I never have to read or hear from that narcissistic blow hard again- that would be a fantastic day!
President Trump should be allowed to say what he wants to say. Every Democrat is allowed to say what they want to say. Fair is fair, but I guess it works only if you are a democrat. Sincerely, John Shapley.
No, Ex-Presidents should not be band from any “Public Platform,” if it is indeed a “Public Platform.” It is capricious to believe that any business is “Public.” It is lie for Facebook, or ANY OTHER BUSINESS to alude to, or insinuate, that they provide a service to the “Public” and deliberately exclude, for any reason, to provide access to the “Public,” Ex-Presidents included. Finally the United States is NOT a Democracy, it is a Republic. The individual states Democratically elect those who will represent the majority within each respective state to represent them. In one designated branch of government, one body of that branch according to population and one branch with an identical number regardless of any States population. The difference between a Democracy and a Republic is stark! A Democracy is a “mob” rule with absolutely no inclusion for those who are not a part of the “mob.” As it stands now, one political party, the Democrat Party, defines itself as “inclusive” while at the same time recognizing, and celebrating, “diversity” (division). The other political party, the Republican Party, defines itself by the inclusion of entire country for its good with NO division. So the choice is there - choose!
JimK, look at the history of the Democrat party. The indescretions of the Democrat Party can fill a library, The Republican Party - a single page written in single space 17 font type.
Fraud is rampant in both politcal parties, but particularly in the Democrat party. The Biden family especially by constantly using their extreme financial greed from governmental positions. ALL the Democrats enrich themselves on the taxpayer's dime. Probably because its easier to use taxpayer tax then to honestly work for a living.
Fascist Herr Trump is is the World Renowned Pathological Liar. There’s no reason we have to be subjected to his daily barrage of inane lies and pettiness. Donny needs his Big Yap Gorilla glued shut. Period.
The website must be for truthful opinions.
At this point Ex-President Donald J. Trump IS A PRIVATE CITIZEN AND HAS HIS CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, JUST LIKE EVERY CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES DOES! ITS COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS "THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH!" And NO he is not yelling "FIRE”!
I support the continuation of the Trump Ban on FB, Twitter, YouTube. your friendly neighborhood constituent, #NY01, Kevin M. Shea, at 1489 Sound Avenue, Calverton, NY 11933
Donald J. Trump has used the social media platforms to spread disinformation and to incite his followers, therefore, he should be punished by not only being banned from social media but for spreading lies, propaganda, and inciting violence, which is not freedom of speech but subject to prosecution under Title 18, U.S. Code 2102.
NO! Actually, I hope Facebook is torn down and fizzles away along with Twitter and Youtube. CNN, MSNBC can follow. Although their ratings are killing them anyhow. Fox is not that great either..
He insighted an attack on the Capital. /closed
I think that anyone who foments hatred and incites conspiracy theories which can lead to someone's death. Should be banned.
Make it permanent-like Twitter. You know how the former president speaks, as Prevaricator in chief. Nothing he bloviates is worth our listening to. Look at how he has totally destroyed any civil communication and constructive re-building of America.
Donald Trump has proven himself an insurrectionist, bigot, and a puppet for entities seeking to sow disinformation and division among Americans. Taking away his platform when he’s shown he’s not mature or responsible enough to use them is the correct course of action.
