Protests in South America Highlight a Femicide and Gender-Based Violence Crisis
Should the U.S. be doing more to help fight against gender-based violence?
What's the story?
- Protests against femicide, oppression, restrictive abortion rights, pay disparities, and gender-based violence erupted across Latin America and the Caribbean on March 8, International Women's Day.
- Protests were held throughout the region — from Montevideo, Santiago, Rio de Janeiro, Quito, Bogota, Mexico City, Quito, San Salvador, and Buenos Aires — representing a wide demographic of women, from students to indigenous leaders to workers.
- Protestors clashed with police in Monterrey, Mexico, and set a government palace gate on fire.
- On March 9, women in Mexico abstained from both work and unpaid labor. The tradition, which began in 2020, was dubbed "Un día sin nosotras" (a day without us) and is an act of solidarity with victims of violence and a demonstration of female contributions to society.
What's the picture of gender-based violence?
- Last year, 4,473 women in Latin America were killed because of their gender, which amounts to 12 murders per day. These numbers only reflect reported crimes.
- Latin America and the Caribbean have some of the worst rates of femicide and gender-based violence in the world. In 2020, a woman was killed every 30 hours in Argentina, while in 2019 alone, nearly 4,000 Mexican women were killed.
- A 2014 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found that one in three women in the region was subjected to violence, and between 17% and 53% reported experiencing domestic abuse.
- Honduras has the highest rate of femicides in the region, with 4.7 femicides per 100,000 women, followed by the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Bolivia, and Brazil.
- Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, who works with the U.N's regional office, said:
"[O]ur obligation is to redouble efforts so that the women and girls of our region can truly exercise their right to live a life free of violence and discrimination."
Ni Una Menos
- You might recognize the Argentinian-founded women's rights movement Ni Una Menos from our site banner, but perhaps not realize their profound impact on the conversation about women's rights and gender-based violence.
- Founded after the murder and rape of Lucia Perez, it means "not one woman less." It inspired mass demonstrations and the birth of women's rights collectives in Chile before spreading to the entire region.
- #NiUnaMenos has promoted treating femicide as a violation of human rights and creating an official registry of femicide cases.
- Argentina’s president Alberto Fernández praised Ni Una Menos during his inaugural speech and established a new Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity.

Yes the US should do more. How about leading by our country's example? Let's work to get the retro States to finally ratify the ERA -you know, to show that our country cares about equal rights and protections for women.
start by protecting womens rights here in the U.S.
and yes, trans women are women.
the U.S. be doing more to help fight against gender-based violence here at-home against women. That should be our first priority!
Again, start at home. We are allowing women, especially trans women, to be raped, beaten, and murdered in this country, and the Violence Against Women Act took weeks to re-authorize because of Republican objections just a few weeks ago.
I think we would do a better job of condemning violence against women in the wide world if we were a better role model here.
Pass the Equal Rights Amendment, permanently authorize the Violence Against Women Act, pass the Equality Act, and stand strong for all women in all situations.
This action against women goes back thousands of years no thanks to misinterpreting religious dictates. The mind set has deeply established itself over time to the over-blown ego of some members of the male gender. The lust for sexual control, greed, control and power over the so-called "weaker sex" as well as those human beings of lesser statis, requires having these tendencies regulated and educated to a more balanced ideaology. It takes time and is not something to envoke overnight. There are always going to be those who think they are better than everyone else regardless of over-blown egos, Inferiority complexes, or down right anger issues. Proper education is the answer and should start in pre-school. We all learn what we live and the only way to change is knowlege and acceptance.
The United States needs to take care of it's own citizens, not someone else's.
Ptovide more resources at the boarder for asylum seekers to gain entry faster.
Pass the ERA bill.
Our government doesn't even know what a woman is. They make a man woman of the year.
If we do not help nations south of us maintain a healthy society and successful economy we lose their business and gain a greater load of refugeees from those countries at our southern border seeking asylum. Those problems we do not solve down there become oour problems up here later.
The USA Republican party is at war with women. They are revoking rights. They are passing new laws to punish women seeking medical care solely for women. They are enabling posses and bounties to harrass women. Some Republicans favor the death penalty. Imprisonment is not harsh enough for some.
Such a damned disgrace!!!
Environmental injustice and gender injustice are linked.
I have known so many women who have gone through the long arduous process of getting a restraining order against their abusive male partner and then have still been killed. The paper does not stop a bullet. Considering the preponderance of guns in our society this is not unexpected. We need better laws to stop gun violence!
Violence against women is endemic in the US. It is not only outright physical violence, it includes oppression or women that engenders fear of physical violence, restrictive abortion rights, and pay disparities, all designed to 'keep women in their place' and prevent their full participation in America society. We are tired of old white men trying to tell us how to live our lives.
No one is lesser than
We need it here against the republicans who cut rights as well as in the world.
America needs to do more doing more to fight against gender-based violence, both at here at home and abroad.
The fact that we have a political party that is homophobic and anti-abortion is a disgrace. The promise of America to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness needs to be fully embraced here at home and championed internationally.
I find it so ironic that Republicans, conservatives and evangleicals cannot stand up for what this nation was founded on. As citizens we need to do more to address this failing. Folks don't have to be afraid of ideas.
Should the U.S. be doing more to help fight against gender-based violence? I believe there should be more done, but it's difficult to see how the US who just took away a woman's right to choose when to have a child could possibly lead the way let alone be setting any sort of example. I think this actually begins at birth. When you have a son you teach him to behave like a human being not an animal that is somehow entitled to take what they want from whom they want it. And in honesty I don't see the US as having done this in a majority of situations. You pretend that Christianity gives men rights over women. You pretend that Christianity teaches men proper behavior, which we see daily is a lie! I just really don't think America knows how to operate an equality based system. You just held yourselves so dear that you decided you could "give me permission" to marry someone other than a white man. Really? We are able to sent examples? Are you joking? Show me how this would work unless you tear down the entire system and start over!
Not sure what this would entail for the US likes to think of itself as superior to others when there are on average, according to the National Coalition on Domestic Violence, an average of 20 people PER MINUTE abused in the US -- that is based on reported figures when for multiple reasons, many instances are NOT reporter. We need to reach out in solidarity asking what we of the America's might do better...I would also suggest that forcing women to have children when they feel that they haven't the footing to raise them, is also a form of domestic violence....
Mind your own house first.
YES!!!!! Gender based violence and discrimination is a human rights abuse and must be addressed with strict, aggressive measures that will punish those who carry out these senseless acts and that includes the latest waves of legislation that restricts abortion and is now trying to make it a crime akin to murder.
We need to be dealing positively with these issues in the US before we can use any authority to interfere with other countrie who are doing what is happening here.. When state legislatures are taking away the rights of women and medical personnel, and our Supreme Court is taking away the rights of citizens and giving more to corporations, we have no moral authority to say anything about these issues to anyone else.
I voted yes, but you lumped restrictive abortion in with violence and murder of women. I am against ALL murder and that includes abortion. I considered not voting at all because you put both issues together and I worry that you will use my vote to justify laws in favor of abortion.
