Election News: Second Trump Assassination Attempt, and Poll Updates

Election Day is 6 weeks away. Here's what's going on in the polls and the presidential candidates' campaigns.
September 24, 2024
- Last week, former President Donald Trump faced what "appear[ed] to be an attempted assassination" at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. This is the second assassination attempt against Trump this year after a gunshot injured him during a rally in Pennsylvania in July.
- On Sept. 25, the Secret Service saw the suspect, Ryan Routh, pointing a rifle at Trump from the bushes and fired several shots at the suspect. Routh was arrested a short time after fleeing the scene. Prosecutors uncovered a letter allegedly written by Routh planning out his assassination attempt on Trump.
- Former President Donald Trump told an interviewer last week that if he were to lose November's election, he would not run again. He said:
"No...I think that that will be, that will be it. I don't see that at all. I think that hopefully we're gonna be successful."
- This week, Trump and Harris are focusing on immigration, a priority for many voters. Both candidates have emphasized increased border security, with Harris supporting a bill that would add 1,500 Customs and Border Patrol agents to the border, and investments in detection technology to stop fentanyl crossing the border. Trump is more focused on finishing his border wall and emphasizing deportation measures. While Harris is opposed to mass deportation, she is more central-leaning on the issue of immigration than left-leaning.
- The polls currently show Harris in the lead, but they can't be expected to show the exact match of Election Day's final results. Nevertheless, if Harris were to win every state where she's currently in the lead, she would have the necessary electoral votes to win the election.
September 4, 2024
- The U.S. announced a forthcoming effort to counter Russian influence in the 2024 presidential election, specifically targeting fake news sites attempting to sway American voters.
- U.S. officials said they'll seize web domains that the Kremlin's state-run media uses to spread propaganda and disinformation about Ukraine, which Russia invaded in 2022. The Justice Department will get involved in the effort by indicting two Russian employees of RT, a state-owned broadcaster, and takedown the Russian influence campaign known as Doppelganger. The Department of State has sanctioned five Russian state-funded news outlets, including RT, Ruptly, and Sputnik.
- Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said:
"The American people are entitled to know when a foreign power engages in political activities or seeks to influence public discourse."
- American spy agencies gauged that the Kremlin would favor former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. The State Department is offering a $10 million reward for information about Russian or other foreign interference in American elections.
August 27, 2024
- As more Americans note having a favorable view of Harris, the Trump campaign is ramping up the attempt to portray her in a negative light. They've claimed that she is a D.E.I. hire, a radical communist, not intelligent, Canadian, only recently became Black, and more. Most recently, Trump's team has criticized her for "dodging the press," saying she "doesn't want to talk about her radical agenda."
- Poll trackers continue to show Harris and Trump neck-and-neck nationally and across key swing states. As August wraps up, Harris is a few points ahead of Trump. Experts suspect the uptick in voter preference may be due to the success of the Democratic National Convention and hope Harris can sustain the wave of support.
- Support for Harris has strayed outside her party lines, as more than 200 people who worked for President George W. Bush and Sens. Mitt Romney and John McCain have signed a letter endorsing the vice president. The letter said:
"We have plenty of honest, ideological disagreements with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz. That's to be expected. The alternative, however, is simply untenable."
- Onlookers see this as a reflection of how Trump has transformed the Republican party under his leadership and the growing group of Republicans who oppose his candidacy.
August 14, 2024
- A week after Vice President Kamala Harris announced Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, a Monmouth University poll found that voters are feeling more enthusiastic about the election with Biden leaving the ballot.
- Nearly 70% of respondents said they were enthusiastic about this presidential election. When it came down to Biden and Trump, enthusiasm never went above 50%. Monmouth University Polling Institute's director, Patrick Murray, said:
"This is clearly a different ballgame. The nominee change has raised the ceiling for potential Democratic support in the presidential contest by a small but crucial amount, at least for now."
- At the same time, the Cook Political Report released polling results that show Harris ahead of or tied with Trump in six of the seven battleground states—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. This is a turnaround from May when Trump was beating Biden in each of the seven states.
- Meanwhile, Harris and Walz are preparing for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next week, where they'll introduce their campaign and platform to the larger swath of voters.

- Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, a former member of Congress, former educator, and veteran, is described as a commonsense choice for Harris. Walz, chair of the Democratic Governors Association, was a leading voice for LGBTQ+ rights and has delivered free school meals, abortion protections, gun restrictions, legal marijuana, and more for his state. The Minnesota governor captured the internet's attention in the past few weeks by calling Trump and his supporters "weird." Since then, the Democratic party has honed in on the word, using it as a campaign tactic to bring Trump down.

I still find it hard to believe that 50% of Americans are dumb enough to vote for a liar, a fraud, a felon or a Putin wana-be. Especially if it's all the same person. Who is tieing his shoes for him?
I'm thrilled that the Harris-Walz ticket is ahead in the polls. However, I am concerned that tRump is already calling them 'fake'. He says that about her crowds, too. He's setting the stage for another January 6th.
You would think that his supporters would be done fighting for the narcissist based on history. But, then again, that crowd really doesn't pay attention to history, nor reality, for that matter.
I'm worried about the MAGA ramifications of another Democratic Presidential win. To deter their actions, it behooves ALL journalists, reporters, commentators, and politicians at every level to confront and condemn the lies, dog whistles, calls for fighting, disinformation, misinformation, and made up calls for vengeance.
What DJ & JD are doing is beyond weird. This behavior destroys our trust in our institutions and decimates our Democracy. It's not okay & needs to be called out NOW!!!

Vice President Harris has turned the campaign around and seems to have the lead. But it's not clear to me just how big that lead is or just how durable it is!
And then there is Trump's Not-So-Secret Plan to Cheat! He has stacked local and state election boards in Too-up states like Georgia. These moles have been told to disrupt and refuse to certify the vote counts. The goal of this is to prevent at least one state from providing any vote count!
That would throw the decision to the U.S. House to make.
And according to the U.S. Constitution each state delegation gets just one vote...
There are more states with majorities of republican representatives--so Trump would win....
Montana gets one vote same as California...

I feel better than I did but Harris backing off universal healthcare sucks balls. Why do we constantly have to do without in this country? When will we get a political leader that will stick to their guns about this? Why is the middle of this country so much to the right?
Sadly, if this election is conducted as the elections in 2020 and 2022, it is likely manipulation of.votes will occur. Photo ID and proof of US citizenship is a must. Spreading the dates that one may vote over other than election day increases the opportunity for fraud.

As I am in Ukraine at the moment, I would just like to correct a few lies from the Zelensky/Trump meeting based on my work here in Ukraine—Trump and Vance you are welcome to come visit although I doubt you have the courage to do so.
1) Zelensky showed up in military fatigues as he has done at every international meeting since day one of the 2022 Russian invasion—the second Russian invasion of Ukraine since 2014—to show his solidarity with the Ukrainian soldiers risking their lives to defend Ukraine, and to emphasize he is the leader of a country at war.
I didn’t see any similar objections to the non-elected immigrant racist white supremacist Elon Musk showing up repeatedly in the White House in a T-shirt and baseball cap which he didn’t even remove—it is a standard sign of respect to leadership to remove your hat—so don’t lecture Zelensky on how to dress.
2) Zelensky is not a dictator and he is not an unpopular leader who is unable to mobilize his people. I have spent many nights and days in the last few weeks with soldiers heading to the frontlines and talking to them, and none of them have tried to refuse to serve and they were heading into the battle with determination and courage—I salute them and respect them deeply.
3) Ukraine and Zelensky doesn’t have to thank the U.S. or Trump—the U.S. and Trump need to thank Ukraine and Zelensky. This is for two reasons.
First of all, Ukraine gave up the third-largest nuclear arsenal in the world voluntarily at the end of the USSR under the Budapest accords guaranteed by the U.S., France, UK, and Russia, giving up several trillion of dollars of nuclear weapons in return for security guarantees for its territorial integrity which Russia has violated and the U.S., UK and France vowed to protect. If Ukraine had kept its nuclear weapons, it would have been one of the most nuclear armed countries in the world and Russia would have never invaded. We, the West, committed to defend Ukraine in exchange for its denuclearization so there is no need for Ukraine to thank the U.S. for keeping its promises. Secondly, Ukraine is defending not just its own territorial integrity but the future of Europe. I have been interviewing people from the Russian-occupied territories the last few weeks and they really do live in a Stalinist prison camp that is unbelievably oppressive. This is what Putin wants to bring to much of Europe and we need to stop him in Ukraine to save our own democratic future, at any price (respecting human rights).
In was in Chechnya 25 years ago documenting the same Russian abuses, together at the same hotel with the murdered Anna Polikovskaya, the murdered Natalia Estemirova, and Memorial’s Oleg Orlov who was imprisoned in February 2024 for “discrediting the Russian military” and later released in a prisoner exchange.
The difference in 1999-2000 is that we could operate in Russia, under the watchful eye of the FSB (the current KGB). The FSB were staying at the same hotel as us, the ACCA in Ingushetia, and one night I found a few cigarette butts on the floor of my room just to let me know they were watching us. Buy we could go to Moscow, Human Rights Watch had a staff and office in Moscow, and do our work despite the dangers.
Since the Russian invasion of 2022 (and long before that), that limited space for activism and civil society has closed down in Russia. There are no more independent journalists or human rights groups operating in Russia and the HRW office has long closed down, and Anna and Natalia and Nemtsov and so many others were simply murdered by Putin. Yet this is what Trump embraces instead of the freedom-loving Ukrainian people, and he has refrained of any criticism of the murderous dictator Putin, instead trying to humiliate the freedom-fighting Zelensky. But Zelensky isn’t humiliated, he stands proud and strong because you cannot be humiliated by people you don’t respect.
Shame on you, you twice impeached and felon convicted orange wanna be. You and your republican supplicants do not deserve our respect—I won’t even spell republicans with a capital R because they don’t deserve that honorific. Shame on you betrayers of our American Values.
